Periyar Research Organisation for Biotechnic and Ecosystem (PROBE)
This is an outreach wing started in the year 1996 with a prime focus on the rural
development through afforestation and biotechnology-based wasteland development
activities. It has developed agro-modules in this locality to provide hands-on training in
various agro-techniques in order to generate employment opportunity for the local
people.

The model farms which include Vallam Nursery for timber trees and bio-diesel plants (Jatropha) has been
maintained in one Ha of land. Seedlings are supplied at nominal price to
individuals, farmers and industrial green cover.
Consultancy services are extended to industries public sector undertaking and private owners.
o Achampatti: There is a 34 Ha multi-crop orchard with water conservation
measures having a future proposal for fruit processing, coconut and coir industries. o Thirumalaisamudram: A six Ha farm at this place is having a nursery for
ornamental plants and fruit trees. It is a module developed for addressing
alkaline soil and water related agricultural problems.
o Vettikkadu: There is a six Ha farm totally rain-fed, developed as an energy plantation.
Every year, the PROBE has organized a two-day national seminar focusing mainly on
revival of profitable farming practices for sustainable development.
Technical and entrepreneurial assistance is given to enterprising youth to establish
rural industries. Industrious youth are identified and training is given to them to
motivate entrepreneurship skills in them. Need-based training programmes are
also conducted for those who opt for such skills.
Afforestation activities in waste lands through community participation is also
encouraged.
Every year, the PROBE honours one best farmer from the project area with gold medal
One best woman entrepreneur who got trained from its training cell has been identified and
Certificate of Merit and cash award have been offered every year.
Students are also encouraged to participate in the PROBE activities and each year
one student volunteer is awarded with gold medal.
