 2005 Power Activities
Periyar Organisation for Women Empowerment and Renaissance (POWER)
POWER is an NGO created for the transfer of technology to the beneficiaries of the Periyar PURA scheme. This organization has been already working in the project area. POWER identifies the aspirants of the identified locality and brings them to the institution to attend the awareness workshops. After counselling, the selected candidates are exposed to Entrepreneurship Development Programmes. Women who exhibit sustained interest are further assisted to apply for various funding schemes.
POWER concentrates on the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHG) of rural
women. So far, 1000 groups have been formed with a membership of around 20,000 women in villages of four districts. The respondents are mobilized by the field workers through the network of volunteers and group leaders.
Power conducts Entrepreneurship Development Programmes for school dropout girls in non-conventional skills such as computer literacy, Internet kiosks, electronic appliances, conventional skills such as tailoring, toy-making, painting and other handicrafts.
It exhibits products produced by SHG in public buildings and government officials and public are visiting the exihibition.
Counselling Services are organized for these women on working skills, personal issues and effective communication for women entrepreneurs.
Mobile medical service for Detection and Prevention of Cancer in rural areas (inaugurated by Hon Justice C.Padmanabhan, chennai High Court) is functioning in the Periyar PURA villages. Awareness camps on general health and one-day medical camps are regularly conducted in these villages.
Skill training for farm women in vermicomposting, mushroom culture, ornamental nurseries and food processing is being arranged through PROBE.
