Workshop and Exhibition on Bamboo Cultivation and its Applications
for Cauvery Delta Farmers
Periyar PURA (Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas) in coordination with NBARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development), RTC-IOB (Rural Training Centre-Indian Overseas Bank, Thanjavur), BEED-Thanjavur (Bamboo Extension and Enterprise and Development) organized a two day bamboo workshop and exhibition on May 12th and 13th 2007 at Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, Vallam on Bamboo Cultivation and its applications for Cauvery delta farmers.
Scientists and Professors from various institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology , Mumbai, Kerala Forest Research Centre Kerala, and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University , Coimbatore were presented in bamboo seedlings production, nursery management, establishment of bamboo plantation, post harvest technology and product development. A demo session about propagation was arranged.
Over 350 farmers from various parts of South India participated in this programme enthusiastically. They realize Bamboo is a good alternative and it gives more income then any others. As an average all the farmers participated in this workshop agreed to cultivate the bamboo in 2 acres. As an outcome, Tamil Nadu Bamboo Farmer"s Association was formed, Mr. R. Pannirselvam, was elected as president.
Exerts on the Workshop cum Exhibition on Bamboo Growing and Product Development jointly organized by Periyar PURA, NABARD, Rural Training Center of IOB, Thanjavur and Bamboo Extension and Entrepreneurial Development, Thanjavur of NMBA at PMCTW Thanjavur.
Bamboo growing and product development workshop cum exhibition was organized at PMCTW, Vallam, Thanjavur on May 12-13,2007. The goal of the workshop was to establish Bamboo as an alternate crop in the Cauvery delta for enhancing the income and employment generation as well to lend sustainability and eco-development in the region.
There had been overwhelming response not only from the Cauvery delta farmers but from the entire length and breadth of Tamilnadu as well. Over 350 farmers enthusiastically participated through out the workshop sessions.
Various aspects of bamboo growing from nursery preparation, choice of cultivars, planting and management were explained and demonstrated by experts on the field.
With the acceleration in the economic growth of the country, various new products of Bamboo are entering the domestic and international market. Experts from IIT, Bombay exposed these new products to the stakeholders who evinced keen interest in knowing and venturing as entrepreneurs. The tools and machineries for processing and value addition to bamboo were also exhibited and explained.
The farmers convinced of the profitability of Bamboo growing were however apprehensive about marketing. The commitment of farmers resulted in the formation of an association of Bamboo growers of Tamil Nadu.
Establishment of small and medium industries with the present available stock of Bamboo in the delta region will enhance the confidence building and commitment of farmers in taking up new plantations on a larger scale. The central and state governments should come forward in a big way in establishing industries and assisting the institutions that desire such ventures.
